The Michigan California Company use small donkey engines (mostly 10x12) and they log only the pine trees except for their own use in bridges and other construction. The result is that the standing fir trees offer protection to fine clumps of pine reproduction and the logged over lands are left in excellent condition. Bruce spark-arresters are used and they have very few fires from the engines.

A 10x12 compound yarder at the Michigan California operation near Pino Grande in a typical setting. The Sugar Pine limb wood is delivered to the engines by a contractor at the rate of $10 per day per machine. State fire law requires clearing of 100 foot radius about each machine. This company is complying with the law though they feel that the hold-over fires around the operation may tend to make their men careless with fire.

A fire line around a donkey setting on the Michigan California operation ready for burning at night. Note the debris and down snag which would be a menace from fire unless removed. The old rotten Douglas fir and thirty young Sugar pine will not be injured by the fire but within the line were five little sugar pines, twelve white fir, seven incense cedars and one douglas fir. All these will be destroyed in order to make the area as a whole safe from fire.

An old spur of the logging railroad of the Michigan-California Lumber Company. The steel was taken up in 1919 but the ties were left. The last logs traveled over this spur in 1918. There is no seed tree of Sugar pine in sight, yet along this entire spur there are many sugar pine seedlings directly in the mineral soil of the right-of-way. This spur lies approximately in the west half of the west half of Section 29 and 30, T 12 N R 13 E. E. Fritz, May, 1925.
