Chaparral fire in Lake County. Much to the delight of the stockmen numerous fires of this kind start throughout the summer and burn with no effort to check them except where improvements are endangered. Relict western yellow pine and Douglas fir are found everywhere, indicating former timber sites.

Lake County chaparral. Note relict western yellow pine in foreground and relict Douglas fir in ravine in the background on exterme left. Frequent burning, followed by erosion, has reduced western yellow pine and Douglas fir sites to chaparral. South slopes are beyond reclamation. Many of north slopes where sufficient soil remains can grow timber again.
